Cedar Springs Homeschool won the 2016 Tennessee Science Bowl over the weekend and will represent the state at the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 28-May 2. In addition to the expenses-paid trip to the nation’s capital, the team also won a trophy and $1,000.
A team from Lausanne Collegiate School, which won the event in 2015, finished second. A team from Oak Ridge High School was third, followed by Brentwood High School.
The student teams competed by answering questions from physics, chemistry, biology and other fields of science.
Johnny Moore, DOE’s science chief in Oak Ridge, said in a statement, “For these students, whether competing in the Tennessee Science Bowl or nationally in DOE’s National Science Bowl, it is not just about winning. These teams are demonstrating that their passion for the sciences is a commitment, and their dreams of future careers in science will soon be realized. In fact, many of these students will go on to become our country’s science and technology leaders, and that’s something DOE strongly believes is worth investing in.”
Besides DOE, other sponsors included Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education and Pellissippi State Community College. TVA, Consolidated Nuclear Security and PetSafe also supported the event.
