murrayCherry Murray, whose distinguished career has included positions at Harvard University and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, was confirmed this week by the U.S. Senate as director of the Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

Here’s a quote from Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz:

“Dr. Murray will be an outstanding Director of the Office of Science, drawing upon her experience in academia as professor and dean of engineering and applied sciences at one of the country’s leading universities, key R&D leadership roles in industry, and as former head of science and technology at one of the Department’s national laboratories. I thank the Senate for the approving her nomination and look forward to working closely with her as Director.”

The Office of Science manages 10 national laboratories, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

For the past year, Murray served as the Benjamin Peirce Professor of Technology and Public Policy and Professor of Physics at Harvard University. Before that, she was dean of Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences from 2009 to 2014.

Earlier in her career, she served as principal associate director for science and technology at Livermore, as well as stints at Bell Labs.

Murray holds a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
