Zacharia, Paranthaman elected to AAAS

Zacharia was honored for his achievements in science administration, Paranthamanfor his research in materials chemistry.

Zacharia, the lab’s chief science officer who played a guiding role in Oak Ridge’s rise to a world-leading position in scientific supercomputing, was cited for “extraordinary contributions to developing and applying forefront computational systems to solve challenging scientific problems, particularly in materials, and for distinguished leadership in research administration.”

Paranthaman, a distinguished research staff member and leader of the Materials Chemistry group of ORNL’s Chemical Sciences Division, is currently focusing his research efforts on materials research related to 3-D manufaccturing of permanent magnets and “lithium separation from geothermal brine, electrode materials for battery applications, polymer composite films, and synthesis of neutron detectors for the Spallation Neutron Source second target station.”

He also serves on the faculty for the University of Tennessee’s Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education.

Zacharia and Paranthaman will be honored at the AAAS annual meeting in February.
