A catalyst developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory reportedly offers special qualities of use in the production of nylon for many products, according to information released by the lab.
The lab said the catalyst has unprecedented selectivity — the ability to target a specific chemical bond — and a conversion rate that’s “nearly twice that of conventional catalysts.”
ORNL chemist Sheng Dai said in a statement, “The greater the selectivity, the more products that can be derived. The catalyst is the main ingredient to speed up desired chemical reactions, and we have created one for synthesizing the nylon precursor that is especially effective at activating the carbon-hydrogen bonds.”
Dai was lead author in a paper published in Nature Communications.
