Over the years, Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been a force in the R&D 100 Awards presented annually by R&D Magazine. This year, the magazine has changed the format, added categories and released a list of finalists for the various competitions. ORNL this week said 13 technologies from the lab had been selected as finalists — with ORNL the lead developer on 10 of them and supporting on the other three. Among the finalists is the 3-D manufacturing system (Big Area Additive Manufacturing or BAAM) that was submitted by ORNL and its partner, Cincinnati Inc. The lab also has a new prototype system in operation at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility. The R&D 100 award winners will be announced in November at an event in Las Vegas. ORNL Director Thom Mason is scheduled to be a speaker.
